Making Of – Abel Tasman

A few months after shooting the In Hearts Wake – ‘Loreley’ music video I headed back to Boulder’s Beach for a second hardcore music video shoot. The band is called Abel Tasman and have recently moved north from Port Macquarie.

The first thing that struck me about this shoot was how in tune with the environment the music was. It was like the ruggedness of the Boulder’s seascape perfectly matched the ruggedness of Abel Tasman’s heavy music. Then, as if on queue, a bleak storm front rolled over us. Seeing this group of young coastal lads pushing themselves to the max under mean storm clouds with big waves in the background was pretty incredible. This music is so tied to the coast, to the surf culture.

As a teenager in Byron Bay my life revolved around two things, bodyboarding and hardcore shows. The Byron Youth Centre hosted big international hardcore acts like Throwdown, Terror and Evergreen Terrace and created local acts like Parkway Drive and 50 Lions. The chaos, energy and intensity was similar to wild surf, from the outside it looked frightening but once you were in it was just a lot of fun.

This music video is simple, wild music in a wild place. Once again Lennox Head delivered me the perfect location.

Dylan Wiehahn grew up two doors down from the Top Shop in Byron Bay and went to Cape Byron Steiner School. He studied a Bachelor of Fine Arts (Film/TV) at QUT in Brisbane and fell in love with Cinematography. Dylan has just moved back home to Byron Bay with his production business, Spring Pictures.
